Troop 26

The Scout’s Experience

Scouts BSA has a reputation for introducing youth to skills-based trainings, outdoor adventures, and leadership opportunities. The newly chartered female troops will share in this tradition and create new pathways for young women to build relationships and serve their community. We uphold the value of troops being scout-led, resulting in unique experiences for each troop and every girl. Scouts make decisions together about how to steer meetings, activities, adventures, advancements, celebrations, and all aspects of troop business.

Adult leaders provide guidance and insight, and offer appropriate support. Together we are creating a safe place to try new ideas, make mistakes, and learn from our experiences.

Troop 26 Logistics
Troop 4026 is a sister troop to Avery Creek’s Boy Scout Troop 26, which meets on Mondays at Camp Stephens. We share a troop committee, charter organization, and other resources, including gear, space, and years of experience leading scout programming. We will offer opportunities for the two troops to scout together as appropriate.

Becoming a Scout

It’s easy, register online today by clicking the button. If you have any trouble, please reach out to one of our Scout Masters for help!

Uniform

Each new scout will need a Class A uniform, consisting of the shirt (roughly $30-40) and matching patches (about 7 total, roughly $2 each). Staff at the Scout Shop can help you pick out the correct ones, including the council strip, unit number (26), etc. A set of green shoulder loops will complete the requirements of a Class A uniform. The Scout Shop also sells pants, shorts, socks, and a hat, which each scout is welcome to purchase and wear as they choose, but BSA uniform requirements are on a “best of your ability” basis. As a troop, we don’t require anything beyond the shirt. Please note that there are often hand-me-down uniform pieces available at Camp Stephens for long-term loan.

Rank

As a new troop, we will work through advancement together; over time, some will choose to work through the ranks more quickly than others. Any new scout joining the troop will begin working on the rank “Scout” and will advance with the support of more senior scouts.

Volunteer

Parents are a vital part of the scouting community, serving as advisors, chaperones, and more. Please consider how you would like to contribute to our troop. To make the process work most efficiently, we need physical support from parents. Specifically, we have a two-deep leadership rule, meaning that any activity that doesn’t involve two adults gets automatically canceled, no matter how excited the scouts may be. If possible, please register as an adult volunteer; registration involves a background check, paying dues, and taking the online Youth Protection training.

Scoutmaster: Shane Applegate

Scoutmaster Shane Applegate is dedicated to fostering a strong, supportive environment where scouts can take the lead in their own adventures. As an experienced Scoutmaster, he emphasizes a ‘youth-led’ approach, guiding scouts as they develop leadership skills, build teamwork, and learn valuable life lessons. Shane believes that scouting is a journey best traveled with curiosity and resilience, and he works to empower each scout to explore, grow, and challenge themselves. With a focus on mentorship rather than direction, he encourages scouts to make decisions, learn from their experiences, and take pride in their accomplishments as they progress on their paths to Eagle Scout and beyond..
